My experience with designing style guides at Cartoon Network taught me how to work with licensed properties. Staying on character and within the guidelines is the main challenge and goal in licensed design. Disney and Warner Bros. have wonderful properties and characters to design with, and their extensive style guides provide a lot of latitude to create original art.
